Educational Psychological Services
Educational assessments are conducted with
children and adults for problems with reading, writing, spelling,
behaviour, and general learning to develop greater understanding
of the difficulties individuals are experiencing.
At HealthAction educational psychologists conducting assessments
are qualified to diagnose a range of learning problems including
specific reading disability (or dyslexia) and language delays.
They also diagnose developmental difficulties such as autistic
spectrum disorders, and other disorders and syndromes.
Educational psychologists at HealthAction make use of highly
regarded and reliable tests that through extensive research
provide valid individual assessments and allow comparisons
of an individual’s performance with the general population.
Psychologists at HealthAction also gather information about
a child’s learning, behaviour and emotional well being
which can involve spending time with other family members
and in the school setting.
The purpose of such comprehensive assessments is to inform
future intervention with the aim of limiting the effects of
barriers to learning and promoting greater inclusion within
their community, for a child or young person.
Psychologists working at the centre have extensive expertise
in assessing and working with children with learning
difficulties including dyslexia. Their approach includes
offering full assessments to investigate the specific difficulties
being experienced and, in recognition of the effects such
difficulties can have on a child’s self-esteem and learning,
to provide counselling that promotes positive
outcomes for these children and their families. Depending
on the outcome of the assessment including the gathering of
other information, psychologists from HealthAction will work
with the child, parents and other family members, and staff
at the child’s school to promote a positive outcome
for the individual with the learning difficulty.
Our aim at HealthAction through promoting positive outcomes
is to develop resilient learners who are able to acknowledge
any difficulties and to develop strategies that allow them
to work effectively to gain a positive outcome.
