Rebates
Certain psychological services are now eligible for Medicare
rebates.
To qualify to obtain a Medicare rebate for psychological
services clients will need to provide a written referral from
a General Practitioner (GP), Psychiatrist or a Paediatrician.
A client is eligible for Medicare rebates if he or she has
been assessed as having a mental health disorder and has been
referred for psychological treatment by a GP under a Mental
Health Care Plan or is under a psychiatrist assessment and
management plan, or on a direct referral by a psychiatrist
or paediatrician.
In most circumstances up to 12 sessions with a psychologist
per calendar year are funded under Medicare with a review
by the referring doctor required after 6 sessions. In addition,
clients are also eligible for 12 group sessions per calendar
year.
For more information about the Medicare rebates for psychological
services please contact HealthAction or Medicare Australia.
Most major private health insurers offer
rebates for psychological services for clients who have extras
or ancillary cover. Psychologists at HealthAction provide
each client with a receipt which includes the details required
by the client's private health insurer. This will allow clients
with the appropriate private cover to receive a rebate for
the psychological service.
